The production of commodity plastics is overwhelmingly dominated by raw materials cost. The raw materials, which are typically derived from petroleum, generally contribute 80% or more of the manufacturing costs. Econic catalysts and processes provide a more cost effective alternative by replacing expensive petrochemicals with carbon dioxide. Up to 50% of the petrochemical raw materials can be substituted with CO2.
For example, polycarbonates from CO2 may be used to substitute petro-chemically derived polyols used to make polyurethanes.
